Its actual purpose
The Met Gala’s purpose is to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The glamourous ball of high fashion is an incredible fundraising gala hosted by Vogues Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour.
It has been hosted on the first Monday of May since 1948.
The event celebrated its 70th anniversary this year and is getting bigger and bigger each time. It is held on the first Monday of May and is the launch of the Costume Institute’s annual show which gives us a look at the massive influence on celebrity and culture.
Tickets are crazy expensive!
If you aren’t an A-list star or a fashion mogul, single tickets cost $30 000 and a table over $275 000. Even with that money, organizers are still extremely picky about who is allowed to enter.
This year there’s an age restriction.
This rule only came into place this year, as the event deemed itself not appropriate for persons under the age of 18. However, you can still attend if you are accompanied by your parents.
Every appearance is planned.
There is a reason why people such as Beyonce and Blake Lively arrive towards the end of the carpet; everything is planned. If you are attending, you will receive a very organized time slot for your arrival, a GPS tracker to make sure you stick to this as well as very specific and limited time on the carpet. This is all according to who you are.
There is a no selfie rule.
Anna Wintour banned photos and social media posts from inside the event in 2015, mainly to protect the privacy of celebrities. This rule however cannot keep up with the rise and obsession of social media, so people like Kylie Jenner are breaking the rule yearly.
Who gets to attend?
Only the crème de la crème of fashion can attend the Met Gala. Celebrities are normally paired up with designers or invited to sit at a brands table. The biggest influencers around the world will be there dressed by the most famous names.
What was this year’s theme?
This year’s theme was, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and is probably the most controversial yet.
My favourite Met Gala look of all time.
This is easily Rihanna at the 2016 Met Gala. The gorgeous imperial yellow, fur trimmed cape and headpiece was handmade by one Chinese woman and took her 2 years to complete the flawless creation.
Thanks so much for reading! More coming soon xx
